Finding help for stammering / stuttering

I'd like to tell you of one thing I tend to do and that is to think of a pendulum.

You talk and maybe have a hand behind your back and swing a finger to a rythm, then try and talk to that rythm. Perhaps the speech may sound a little poetic, but it helps.

Also I find that being physically expressive helps; use your hands to 'throw' a word out, or simply move around a little. In other words use a bit of acting ability - I've even been known to speak in a false accent on the phone to someone I don't know.

There are many little things which can help, but here are a few useful places....

Finally, I would re-iterate that I've got through having one, but if I'm totally honest, I would rather not on many a occasion. Thereagain,my life has evolved as is and I'm pretty happy about my life in general!

"The stutterer feels at most times apart and different from others in society. He feels that although others also have difficulties in life, they can cope with them and live much easily with their problems. He feels more permanently crippled than others because of the fact that he cannot hide or conceal this speech difficulty, and therefore, he is the constant target of their embarrassment, ridicule and disapproval" (Barbara)

As with anything, if in doubt, ask your Doctor for advice. In the case of stammering, there is much help out there

“No man can tell but he that loves his children, how many delicious accents make a man's heart dance in the pretty conversation of those dear pledges; their childishness, their stammering, their little angers, their innocence, their imperfections, their necessities, are so many little emanations of joy and comfort to him that delights in their persons and society.”

Jeremy Taylor quotes
