There are ways round the cost. Ask your self do yo NEED a land line? My company asked me to have a company phone for work use. I told them yes BUT i'd want to use it for personal use. I'm a light user and a greed if I added noticibly to the bill I'd curb useage. My wife had my old phone because when I called to cancel they agreed to let me keep it on a no upgrade contract for £5 a month with £5 worth of free internet time. Total phone bill for all phones is £5. If I have to call 0845 number the boss lets me do it from work because it saves me using the company phone. I agree.
