The madness of Memory

« Previous: Successful Job Application
Next:How to look busy »

Although I’m a still pimpled 58 year old, I have to confess that my memory is going completely down the drain!

There are things about it I just don’t understand…..

Why can I remember everyone’s name in my school class from 45 years ago, but can’t remember the name of the chap I’m supposed to phone straight back after 5 minutes…….

Why can I remember where every toy and book I had as a child was kept in my bedroom, but I have to phone myself on the mobile to find out where I left it - then realize I turned it off!

It appears our brains seem to like the good old days. It would be helpful if we had Windows ’system restore’ embedded in our head somewhere wouldn’t it!

Just imagine, you could go back to where you were before you lost something and make a better job of it - or would you!

I know he was only doing his job, but I went to the Doctors last year. I’d had a few TIA’s a few years back and it seemed I was getting quite clumsy, or so everyone told me.
Anyway, the Doctor comes out with this card and says he’s giving me a memory test of 12 questions.

I can’t remember them all, but here’s a few…

What is your name?
How old are you?
What is your address?
Within half an hour, what is the time now?

It did cross my mind that surely the fact I’d got up, made an appointment, drove from my home to make it on time and given my name upon arrival at Reception, did I really need this !

So, what is the cure for it; Post-it notes on the door, a knot in your paper tissue, texting yourself or worst of all, asking your kids to phone you with a reminder. The problem being that you would have forgotten they’re ringing and gone out somewhere.

There’s no solution - we are, in the words of every good Doctor, “getting on a bit and not getting any younger’.

Play along with it - think of the things you can blame your memory on, loads of stuff

.
Three older ladies were discussing the travails of getting older. One said, “Sometimes I catch myself with a jar of mayonnaise in my hand in front of the refrigerator and can’t remember whether I need to put it away, or start making a sandwich.”The second lady chimed in, “Yes, sometimes I find myself on the landing of the stairs and can’t remember whether I was on my way up or on my way down.”

The third one responded, “Well, I’m glad I don’t have that problem- knock on wood.” As she rapped her knuckles on the table and then said, “That must be the door, I’ll get it.”

Yes, sometimes the only way to remember what I went upstairs for is to go downstairs and start again.

And I can’t count the number of times I’ve gone out to the garage to fetch ‘A’ - “and while I’m there I’ll get ‘B’”; come back with ‘B’ but not ‘A’

As you get older you think more about the Hereafter.
You go into a room and think “what was I here after”
