ON THE RADIO
With a lot of people fed up with BBC Radio and it’s reluctance to ‘move on’; 1964 saw the introduction of ‘Pirate Radio’. These were basically radio stations on a boat anchored just outside legal British Waters and were listened to by keen youngsters with their transister radios under the bedsheets.
Radio Caroline was the first, followed closely by Radio Sutch and Invicta Radio, both did not last long, but it shook the BBC up enough to change it’s whole programme policy shortly afterwards.
All in all, much of the entertainment reflected the mood of the time; Harold Wilson for Labour replaced a long standing Conservative led Government albeit by just 5 seats.
Mods and Rockers were clashing at numurous seaside resorts causing havoc on every Bank Holiday weekend. The Sun was first published and the war in Vietnam escalated causing the start of many peace campaigns.
