Servicing my Honda Lawnmower !!!

« Previous: An evening with Tommy Steele
Next:More ideas for the Dragon’s Den »

First of all I’d like to say that my Honda Lawnmower is the best Mower I’ve ever owned. It has cut my grass plus about 6 other people’s, put in the back of a Micra, Escort, Fiesta and Cinquecento.
In fact I know of at least 4 other people who have brought a Honda Mower on my personal recommendation.

But, there comes a time when wear and tear starts to get the better of them. My Mower starts first time every time (regardless of the Filter falling off 15 month’s ago). It’s just the rest which needs that loving and careful maintenance which only it’s owner can give.

Because I’m saving my money to get my teeth sorted out, I can’t afford to have it repaired, or buy a new one.
So I’ve gone the DIY route and would like to share with you some useful info on going about it yourselves.

1. When the Handle has snapped at the bottom

The tools I’ve used for this job are; One piece of 1″ x 1″ Timber, One Tent Pole, About 24″ of Gaffer Tape, Two Plant Ties, Sellotape, Chicken Wire and a Swan Vestas Match.
The pictures above amply supply you with the info needed, but I must point out that it is best to put the 1″ x 1″ Timber on the outside of the Handle as you find you can’t get the Grass Box in and have bend it.

2. Repairing Holes in Grass Box

Tools required; Gaffer Tape (both for fixing hole and using adhesive side to take the grass off the front of your trousers afterwards).
This will last quite a while (about 5 minutes). I’ve found that cutting the grass when wet helps as the grass inside does a similar job to Cycle Inner Tube Slime and bungs up the hole.

3. Fixing broken Wheel Height Lever

Tools Required; Old Screwdriver, Pliers and Builders Caulk. Place the screwdriver in the gap where the Lever once was. Fill gaps with Caulking and squeeze sides together as hard as you can using Pliers. Just one word of warning - Be careful when mowing under stubborn hedgerow. The screwdriver has a tendancy to spring out and hit you in the eye. Local A&E Departments refer this to ‘Prats Eye’ and can be quite painful.

4. Cutting the Grass after full Service

Most people seem to prefer the striped effect lawns. Personally I go for the Railway Line look and by not changing your blade since you purchased the Honda Mower 5 years ago, this can easily be achieved.

I hope you found these few tips useful. I am planning to put together a few more pages shortly on; How to use Clothes Line as a Strimmer Wire alternative, How to disconnect your telephone service with a Chainsaw and guest writer Neil Peck (ex-colleague at Kent County Cricket Club) will be forwarding an article on information about giving Hedgehogs a quick haircut with a Flymo.

Can’t wait to get my teeth.

This is great, just shows how good the hondas are. I have got a dyson cleaner that is fixed up just like your lawnmower. Shame I can’t share the photo!

I need to know how to change the oil in my Honda Mower It is the best I have ever had or used in my life I love it and want to treat it as good as it has treated me. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

Usually, the oil cap is on the other side of the lawnmower to the petrol cap, with a grey cap.

Unscrew and you’ll see it has a level marker like a car.
You get lawnmower oil from a large DIY Centre.

To empty the oil, make sure there’s no petrol in the tank and lean the mower sideways. There should be a bolt somewhere below the oil cap.

It’ll be quite black if you haven’t changed it for a while.

Hello I have a Honda rotary mower HRR216vxa and will not start, it is not getting spark. I changed the spark plug, it just quit the other day. Thanks for any help given

These are some clever fixes. The only one I had happen to me was that the grass box kept breaking. I just ordered a new one instead of going with the, obviously much better gaffer tape method. Oh well.

Thanks, great replies !!

I have to admit I’ve now sown the grassbox, using String.
I honestly don’t know how the Mower keeps going!!
Honda certainly build them well.

[...] Now, you may think ‘What about the Honda?’ ( see here ) which I so majestically repaired last year. Well, the Gaffer Tape, bit of one by one, the string sowing of the grassbox etc. finally gave way to the main frame suddenly splitting. The last Mower was indeed a better one than the new one in many ways, but that was brought for cutting other peoples lawns as well as mine, so this must now do. But it’s not bad. [...]

I have a problem with my Honda HR194 SXA lawnmower. The lower handle bar has snapped at the bottom, just above where it is bolted to the chassis. If anyone knows of a broken down lawnmower of the same model, for spares, please Email me on mhusens@mail.com
Thanks.

My rusty old honda lawn mower is still kicking. Each year in the spring, I think “this is it old friend” but again, it proves me wrong and turns over. Amazing. How do they do it.

Honda HR 194 breaking for spares. Chassis rotted out but everything else 100% OK.

My son who mows the lawn told me the last time he cut the grass the engine was sputtering. I looked at the air filter and it was black. Cleaned it. Checked the oil and it too was black. Changed it. Afetr the next mow, checked the oil again and it was BLACK. Mower is still sputtering WITH a clean air filter. What is the problem? Thanks

I was quoted £100 for a basic service.

I have a Honda Eco Rotary mower HRG4 15c S serial no.8902868 which is playing up this year by starting well and then cutting out after about 30 secs. - is it because a filter is blocked and where is the damn thing? I’ve bled the carb. and cleaned the plug also sloshed out the petrol tank - am I missing something? Please help me.

By matthew. June 7th, 2010 at 7:54 pm

Try changing the spark plug for a new one. Although the old one may look ok Honda’s have a tendancy to get through plugs quicker than B&S engines. I’ve just serviced an HRB425 which wouldnt start - fitted new NGK BPR6ES & started first pull.

Jimmy
