Stereotyping 60

« Previous: True meanings of a Curriculum Vitae

As I write I am 60 years and 5 days old. Do I like it? At the moment not a lot! Another year maybe, but a year is an easier challenge than a decade!

But, now as I have, through a fluke of nature, attained this great landmark, have I felt any sudden changes?

I must admit that on my way home from Southampton two days ago, I did have sudden impulses to drive at 45mph in the middle lane, making sure I was sitting so low down that the driver behind may think the cars going on automatic pilot.

Then, upon returning to Ashford I nearly found myself racing down to the Shops for a light thorn coloured Gaberdene Jacket, light trousers and canvas shoes for the summer months to come.

Luckily I wasn’t drawn into Specsavers to have my eyes tested, but that was only because I left my specs in the car and couldn’t see the place anyway. Do they still do those old NHS Tortoise Shell design glasses or is that seen as ‘Retro’ thus putting the price up to over three hundred quid?

It was all I could do from leaving the Car down town and riding home on the Bus, after all, one of my birthday presents was a Tartan Design Shopping Basket (the one’s you fall over in the gangway).

It isn’t even as if I can call myself a Senior Surfer, I’ve been silver for about 10 years now. I thought it was just a bad bout of dandruff at first, until someone called me a miserable old git rather than just miserable git.

So am I to go down this ‘over 60′ stereotyping? Maybe in the summer I’ll have the urge to take a rare Sunday off, pack a sandwich, fill up a thermos flask, buy the Sunday Paper, drive to the Cliff Top Car Park at Dover and watch the boats coming in before switching off to an afternoon snooze only to be woken up by someone banging on the door and a voice saying “You alright my Friend”.
Mind you, that doesn’t sound too far amiss from when I was 19 years old, but for other reasons!

At the moment I’m happy with my lot, or as happy as I can be. I look back over my 50’s. It was a decade where I earnt less than the decade before, but in return I found new challenges, new ventures, a better way of life, learnt more than I ever had before, got grand children and generally started to actually believe I had a goal.

Will I be stereotised? No, I want to be a Hells Silvertop, wear what I want no matter what others say, do my thing, play ‘She’s not there’ just like the Zombies and I did back in the 1960’s.

The almost oldest rocker in town!

As a senior citizen was driving down the M25, his car phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife’s voice urgently warning him, ‘Godfery, I just heard on the news that there’s a car going the wrong way between Junctions 7 and 9. Please be careful!’

‘It’s not just one car,’ said Godfery. ‘It’s hundreds of them!’
