Autumn arrives Down the Lane

Yesterday Autumn arrived, but Down the Lane it seems it got here in name only. Yesterday was 23 degrees and today 22 degrees!

You may recall a post I made about six weeks ago in which I said it was like Autumn had arrived then. Well, since then, all seems to have gone in reverse; there [...]

Autumn in July ?

Looking around my garden this evening I had to remind myself of the time of year. I wandered out to a slightly chilled evening and strolled around the Garden.
It was then I noticed how many leaves there were on the ground from the Laurel, how brown and red the Virginia Creeper has got and numerous [...]

Rail Fare increases - more than just money!

.

So here we are, 2009 and at only the beginning of a Credit Crunch. To counter lost sales, most Retailers are turning to discount simply to get people through the doors. The Railways however have a different slant - put fares up and move the goalposts on times allowed off-peak cheaper travel.
Travelling by Train is [...]

Xmas lighting - the eco nightmare

.

I said in the previous article about wrapping Christmas presents that so many of us spend all year saving energy and thinking green, then blow all the hard work away through about 3 / 4 weeks over the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Just about the worst effect on the carbon footprint is Christmas lighting, both [...]

Christmas Gift Wrapping - The Frugal way

.

This isn’t about ‘bah humbug’, it’s about many things; recycling, saving money, saving tree’s, plus much more. But it’s also an ideal way of making a Statement about your character and how you feel about certain things, such as Christmas, are not just about cash and glitter.
After all, we spend most of the year really [...]

Bird Brain

I picked up two definitions of ‘Bird Brain around the Dictionaries; ‘A person regarded as silly or stupid’ and ‘an annoyingly stupid and shallow person’.
(and some more)
For me, it’s just as easy to call a person ‘a prat’, who is someone so silly they fall on their buttocks (hence the village in Kent named ‘Pratts [...]

Save energy by using it !

I was having a discussion with an acquaintance the other day about Electrical, Gas and Solid Fuel Heating and I told him how I collect and burn all my own wood collected from the Woods around me.
His reply to this was “Seems like work to me”.
Well, it is a true statement I guess. I don’t [...]

A Green walk to the Shop

But for how long ?

It could be one of many walks from home to the shop across the Country. Living on the edge of a Town gives you the benefits of both world’s; easy access to Shopping Centres and easy access to the Country.
Being an unusually nice morning, I thought I’d take a stroll to [...]

The Nosey Robin

I love just about every wild bird. Seeing them in my front garden from the Kitchen window never ceases to amaze me what clever and ‘cred’ these creatures are.
We’ve got Woodpeckers, Chaffinch’s, Ti.t’s, the occasional Bullfinch, Heron’s, just about everything that flies in this part of Kent.
But one bird you can be sure of giving [...]

Thoughts of a Wood Collector

Woodland is not a work of Art - it is the work of a miracle

Every year about this time I set about collecting wood for the Rayburn and Living Room fires. It’s not far to go, a small wood sits at the side of the field at the bottom of the Lane. Hardly anyone ventures [...]
