laying paving slabs on concrete base

I have a concrete patio in which the surface is breaking up. I would like to lay paving slabs on it, but I am unsure how to do it. If it were laying slabs on the ground there is plenty of advice about, but do I lay a bed of sand or sand/mortar on the concrete? I will also have to raise the level of ...

Bye-Bye Daybreak

I see Daybreak is being ditched by ITV. I'm not surprised. I never could stand Adrian Chiles in this programme, or in the Beeb's The One Show either.

Re: Grocery prices

So you live in the SE Rhubarb; so did we 12 years ago, if you call Farnborough, Hants., south-east. When we go south to visit friends and rellies, we can't help but notice how much more expensive shopping is there, even in the same supermarket. I guess they set their margins to what they think the l...

Grocery prices

In the Mail today (yes, I read the Mail; so what?) there is an article about the price of groceries in 2006 and now. I've been checking the 'now' prices against what we pay and they seem a bit OTT to me. Perhaps it's because we live 'oop north' where shopping is known to be cheaper, and also we live...

Acer/Japanese Maple

I've tried to grow these from potted young trees bought from garden centre, but I've somehow managed to kill them all off. We've tried three different varieties, but none have survived my attentions. They have been planted in large patio pots; would planting straight into the ground be better? My cl...

Re: frugal new car

I think I read somewhere that Micras are one of the easiest cars to steal.

Re: Do hens go on and off lay?

Hi folks, back again after a long absence. All the remaining three of my girls have stopped laying (lost one about three weeks ago). They are all ex-battys (was there ever a name more appropriate!), and I've had them for about 18 months now after aquiring them from Hen Rehomers. Could it be that the...

Re: new car

Our model Renault may not suit you (Modus Grande) but any Renault with their 1.5 litre deisel engine I can guarantee will be very economical. The computer reads up to 62mpg on a run.

Re: cheap petrol

As Meredith said, it wasn't the government that lost out, it was Asda, which means, in the end, the customer. You don't really think that they will take that kind of loss smiling do you? Their margins will be protected one way or another, as it would be in any other well-run business. As for why did...

Smallest egg

I often see on this forum the largest egg being recorded, but today I collected what must be one of the smallest eggs. It is 3 cm long and 2 cm diameter, and it is red one end. I think it was laid by one of my chooks because I can't see a wild bird choosing their nest box to lay an egg. Do I need to...

Re: Funny tasting yolk

I'll go along with the peppers I think. Thanks for the other suggestions, but it is only in the egg yolks that Irene tastes the tinniness, not other foods. As for the pregnancy theory, it is not possible at this stage of her life. It would be a bloody miracle, would stake our place in history, and f...

Funny tasting yolk

The Boss (AKA Irene) is complaining that the egg yolks from our chooks taste 'tinny'. They are fed on layers pellets, left overs from our meals (ie rice, pasta, greens, corn, tomatoe, cucumber, lettuce, capsicums, with meal worms on top). They go mad when I approach the run with their pink bowl cont...
