Re: On the news today

That's just stupidly sensationalist journalism! What was the point? It was obviously safe enough to stand in, so not such a brave feat after all! I could find chest deep water on a road less than half a mile away, it's been there for about a month, I wouldn't paddle in it. There is rapidly flowing w...

Re: On the news today

It's worse now the sacred London is getting wet. They ran out of shock horror stories here when Tewkesbury residents refused to cry or shout about getting flooded again - to be honest the water is really high but not at the horrendous record heights. So the real problem is the length of time roads h...

Re: 101 Household hints

If the lettuce storage is the kilner jar one it most definitely works.

I think I posted about it last year. I was so surprised that it worked so well. 6 days on and the lettuce was still crispy. I will be doing that again this year for certain.

Re: Conservatory roof

Definitely nets or muslin. You can die them too. I use them in my greenhouse as they are easier to clean than the paint stuff.

If/when we move I will have to run up a set for the conservatory too. I think I'll choose a nicer finish than 'some sort of green' for that though :-D

Re: Anyone cook proper Indian food?

I got the cheap jars from The Rnge a while ago. Otherwise the Tan Tree (Du,nelm) is OK and we have a Home or something that sometimes carries them at a good price. I haven't found a cheaper online supplier yet! And I haven't frozen whole or ground spice as the freezing seems to take off the high not...

Re: Boos frugal 2014

Ach! It must be a week for it as my ME has flared up and bitten hard. I feel so very, very drained. Are you sleeping? I was but seem to have lost the knack again! I may have to switch on the Wii again, something more gentle for exercise is required. Either that or I'll drive round to yours and we ca...

Re: Stef's Frugal 14

Great week. £20 for petrol and £7.20 for food. Tonight we are having steaks a la Bernie Inn Tomorrow we go looking at houses again and Sunday I will have to buy some clothes. My jeans just won't stay up and I have to visit the APs in Spain in a couple of weeks! Outlet shop here I come (Gap maybe. I ...

Re: Anyone cook proper Indian food?

We do from scratches every now and then. We have a range of spices from the local Asian supermarkets and are working our way through Madhur Jaffry (for about the 40th time), Rick Stein and the Hairy B's - book club purchases. I usually make a lot and freeze loads back. The veggie options freeze real...

Re: Bob Blakely on 'The Voice'

Will I Am did say he would have to do something..... maybe a quick word was had! The problem, as they whispered on Saturday, was they loved him but couldn't see how he would fit with what they had in mind. Then again, they seem to pick all the singers who have the pub singer "EEeeeeeOooooo"...

Re: Stef's Frugal 14

Yowser. 2 no spend days - OK £1.35 on coffee. That's cos yesterday was supposed to be a Down Day - 500kcals only - so I had an omelette when I got home. Today has become a second Down Day - definitely unintended, fortunately I am not feeling hungry. I have been invigilating exams all day, 9 - 5pm so...

Re: Best tip of 2013 for 2014?

Thanks Perchy.

Details in my Frugal Diary but I wanted to say ta!

I did a freezer check and made up pies and lasagne, mentally noted green stuff and may well make more pies and a stew with what I had lurking in there.

Wonder what I'll find next month? :-D

Re: Stef's Frugal 14

Well I went shopping today. I needed ratty treats - they were on a twofer! I had to have a large cork display board - I will be making it into a jewellery display thing. It is 60 x 90cm and cost £2.50. Even after I have added the fabric covering it will only cost £2.50 plus the staples for a staple ...

Stef's Restart

Well. I didn't manage enough last year. I think I tried to do too much. But I have had a rethink and will have more time this year (new job is far less stressful). So I am perusing the seed packets and making a small list. I must remember to keep an eye open for the seed swap thread. I have a few pa...

Re: Raw Food Diet

I sort of do during the summer. I can't do it 'properly' as sprouted beans of all sorts make me violently ill. But I do have a tendency to eat fruit and veg as they come, or only lightly cooked - like wilted spinach - when the weather gets very hot, some years for a couple of months. But I am very a...
