Re: Cucumbers

I have two cucumber plants in the greenhouse and the leaves are going a bit yellow. I think if I am honest I have over watered them, so am keeping them a little drier. If it is not that, does anyone know what it may be please? Hi Gwen like Lancashire Lass I like to grow my Cucumbers outdoors as wel...

Re: Germination

That is interesting, Bill. My carrots if you can call them carrots have been a disaster over the last two years, very small and wobbly, but no carrot fly and they did taste nice after about three quarters of an hour cleaning them in all the nooks and crannies. Yes had some of them ,heavy clay soil ...

Re: Germination

All the seeds I have set this year are use before 2015 Well that's annoying, Bill! And encouraging too, I suppose, but I'm pleased for you that yours have worked. I hadn't actually looked at how old the other things are, but actually they go back to 2011 growing season, so maybe I'm asking a bit mu...

Re: Germination

That's a really helpful answer, LL, thank you - and the link very much so. I think I'd been thinking along the right lines, but was getting variable results. On reflection and in consideration of your answer, I think my problems are largely due to lack of warmth. I have moved trays into the car but...

Re: Back in the garden

Yes thank you. My hobbies are folk dance and music. One of the dance clubs I go to has quite a few people my age so we mostly 'dance' with a musical walk; you'd hardly think we are doing the same dances that were danced with fancy, bouncy steps in Jane Austen's time by young ladies looking for husb...

Re: Back in the garden

I will admit that 5 years has made some difference to the way I work and the speed it seems to take 4 or5 times longer now and 10 times longer than 10 years ago Doesn't it just! When you are young even 1 year seems to make all the difference between yourself and others. Then as an adult a few decad...

Re: Back in the garden

Hello Bill When Ted died I was not going to do any gardening, apart from keeping the flower beds half decent, and dragging all the pots out of the greenhouse where they had wintered. I also binned opened packets of seeds Big mistake, but I didn't expect all this turmoi, and difficulty in obtaining ...

Re: Back in the garden

If I can offer help to anyone Gwenoakes will be happy to . Think some home grown will benefit us all and maybe help our friends if fresh veg should get scarce later in the summer. Hope you are well and keeping safe.

Back in the garden

Hi everyone , due to the present climate of being in lockdown for 13 weeks I thought it was time to get back to some serious veggie growing. 2015 was the last time as a new hobby swooned me away from the garden, due to the restrictions in place now I can no longer pursue that hobby so it is back to ...

Re: Is everyone tidied up and ready for Spring ??

As things have been finishing ,i have forked the beds over ,forked in rotted compost and covered with black plastic and weighted down .The plastic warms the ground in the spring and keeps any late weeds away ,though potatoes will always find away .I have dug a trench where my beans will go and fille...

Re: Heated Greenhouse Winter Gardening

I think trying to keep a growing temp in a greenhouse through the winter can work out expensive ,its not only heat but maintaining enough light can be another problem ,with the wintertime sun being so low in the sky and the days so short .Moulds on plants would be another problem .I have overwintere...

Re: Ash and charcoal - what will grow?

Hi Ryan Most things will grow in any media ,its how well they grow i suppose that is the main question.Rhubarb from my own experience likes a rich well drained soil ,i like to put lots of well rotted manure around my plants every year .Blueberries do like an acid soil and grow well in pine forests,r...

Re: What next?

It is a fact ,to grow your own is a labour of love ,what you get out of it depends on what you put in .Over the years i have worked hard on my veggie garden and like yourself sometimes wonder if its all worthwhile .When things go right it is always yes but invariably things tend to go wrong more oft...
