Found a dead stoat??

Post by bluebell »

I went to feed Jas yesterday morning and as usual pulled out his water bucket from stable to clean, I was just about to say "you been pooing in your water again" when I noticed it was not poo but some animal floating in water.

It looks like a stoat, brown with a creamish chest, shorter, furrier tail than a rat..... or am I confusing with a weasal??? :?

Anyway, its dead! {cry}

I have just googled it.....did it have a black tip on it's tail?

Info is HERE - i certainly get the feeling many people get confused with them, but I think yours is probably a weasel. It's only a guess though!

Black tip = stoat then!

I bet next time I wonder, I will remember ONE of them has a black tail tip, but als bet I won't remember which! They really sound very similar otherwise, don't they?

It's simple really.

A weasle is weasily recognised, and a stoat is stoatally different. :-D

I was surprised when i saw a dead stoat close up, how big it was. Not as big as a cat, but quite chunky. Bigger than a rat I think, not as big as a rabbit but big enough to kill one - I watched one do it once. Weasels are delicate in comparison.

I assume Jas is a horse, it's a shame when things drown in their water. We felt very guilty about a Little Owl that we found in my daughters ponies water tub.

Jas is my IdxTB lad, Mo. Unfortunately he needs his water and I've found a few things in his water bucket (I use one of those rubber trug type things). Worst for a family of blackbirds which were nesting in his stable, all babies were drowned, I cried like a baby finding them, was in such a state.

He did once stand on a rat and kill it
