Swarming!

Post by Mallard »

91 year old Walter surveys two bee swarms from his hives on the plots!
He managed to contain the biggest, which happened to be the low one, in a box, then waited for evening for his bee keeper friend to arrive so they can transfer them to a hive!

Walter told us today they don't sting when they're swarming because they're on a honey high! He didn't bother suiting up to move them. He also said he got his first bee hive from his dad when he was seven! 84 years experience! )b(

Oh wow, I would love to meet Walter. There is nothing to beat experience, I can only claim five years and at the age I started I am never going to come near to that many years.

How do you persuade a swarm to go into a hive?

You don't persuade, they are bagged up and transfered to a hive. The queen once in the hive cannot get out normally, so the workers have to stay with her, they are programmed to do this. )t'

 Thanks Steve,

I knew the workers stayed with the queen, but was wondering how you found the queen in amongst all the swarm to put her into the hive first!

Tip the whole lot in, put lid on and voila! )t'

OK stupid question alert:

If she cant get out of the hive, how come she and all her cronies are in a bush somewhere?
