Pigeon

Post by LisaB »

We have a pigeon that comes in our garden often at the moment, it seems quite friendly and it's in lovely condition but it appears to have a limp and doesn't venture very far from the garden, the chickens seem to like it and it's always hanging around the run with them.
Just wondering, it has a leg ring on, does this mean someone owns it?

Yes, if it's got a ring on its leg that means it belongs to someone.

Take a look at http://www.nationalpigeonassociation.co.uk/#/lost-birds/4526937672 and there's instructions on what to do and who to contact.

The other place to report it (if it doesn't say NPA on the ring) is http://www.homingpigeons.co.uk/lostpigeon.htm

Thank you :)

I'll leave some food and water out near the house to see if I can get a better look, I'm not sure if it can fly or not it does keep disappearing but it soon comes back.
I'm not 100% sure on the limp, I always think pigeons walk funny :oops: but I'll try and get a closer look!

I know theres someone about 15 minutes away who has/used to have homing pigeons, but I'm pretty sure they were all white.

Hi a couple of years ago we had a pigeon lurking round the garden, and when I approached it, it flew off, so thought nothing more about it. Next morning was just getting into my car and found the pigeon dead on the drive.

I contacted one of the organisation named above and spoke to a really helpful lady, who took the leg ring details and notified the owner. A couple of days later I got a phone call from a gent who was really grateful that I had contacted the organisation, he told me a bit about the bird, he was from about 50 miles away and must have got lost on the way home during a training session. I assured the gent there wasn't a mark on the bird and that it looked like it had died quickly. {cry} I buried him in our garden.

Aww no {cry}

I haven't see the pigeon today though, but I think my mum saw him this morning.
He's (I think it's a boy anyway) been visiting for about 4-5 days now, and I'm sure I can often hear him purring (I don't know what it's called really, that quiet, low noise that pigeons make, sounds kinda like a purr).
What do pigeons eat? Is there anything that's likely to attract him? Dried mealworms?
