Bee ID please

Post by p.penn »

These bees keep appearing in my composter, then seemingly vanish again, then reappear. I know it's not a brilliant pic, but does anyone know what type of bees they are please?

Oh thank you so much Perchy. I was worried they may be honey bees and I would have to dig in the chicken poo to retrieve it.

>dum<

PS the pic should be on it's side, but for some reason it isn't. So would you all mind having another look with your heads tilted 90 degrees? +f+

I didn't notice long horns, but I'm afraid I only seem to have got pics of their bottoms. >dum<

They seemed to have a black rear end and a sort of yellow bit between their wings. They were quite small and were very gentle

These are solitary Bees they live in small colonies normally have little or no sting . Normally move site after a few weeks . They may come back to visit you now and again the like dry places to live .Can be found in walls or in a bins . They like warm sheltered places under wooden patios is another favourite place for them to live.

I cant see the piccie properly.

LENNY24124 - Are those bees you mentioned what we call masonary bees here? They are small, buzz like mad, usually come at the beginning of summer and then disappear and they dont seem to sting - least ways we have never been stung by them.

Thank you very much Lenny. I am rather relieved they are not honey bees - I would have worried about them!

BTW, I did buy a Bee identification chart at a flower show a few weeks back, but despite spending ages staring into the composter,I still couldn't work out what they were >dum<
