They really are something and to think they fly up from North Africa every year is quite something !!

Their underwing is fascinating.
I took below photo at Samphire Hoe last Summer..

Beautiful photos Richard. As you say, an epic journey indeed. We saw one very worn one on Arran at the beginning of June & I think we had one in the garden last week but it didn't land to confirm! Do you log your sightings anywhere? I do on Butterfly Conservation (Warwickshire branch) they really do appreciate the sightings so worth doing if you've got time. Our best sightings this year to date was Hummingbird Hawkmoth in the garden on 1st July the 1st one for about 4yrs. Well done on getting pics, they always seem to disappear before I can get one!!

I haven't seen a Hummingbird Hawkmoth for a couple of years, they are special and to know the Painted Lady's get that far North is incredible !!

I don't log as such, just take photos.
It's like I had a Bullfinch in the garden the other day, first for two years but couldn't get the Camera quick enough, so I tend not to 'log it' as a sighting if you see what I mean.

I had a lovely little Whitethroat in the garden as well yesterday. There are loads in the fields around here but very rare for one to come in the Garden.
Same applies to Yellowhammers.

PS. I forgot to mention Brimstone on my list yesterday.
