Fat Balls

Post by Babycakes »

Yesterday Gracie and I made fatballs for the birds. We put wild bird seed and dried meal worms into containers (everything from yoghurt pots to old jelly moulds!!) We melted some lard in a tin can in a pot of water (we wanted it liquid but not hot!) and poured it over the mix. Then we knotted a loop of string and shoved it intot he middle. They set nicely in the fridge )t'
Am going to try one out when I get home - and will have pics on my blog around middle of next week .
Waiting to welcome Sunny Clucker to Northern Ireland!

Sooooooooo..... not the embarrasing medical condition I imagined then :-D

I tried this with lard and ready brek - the things set like iron but we hung them up anyway. A week later the ground was littered with broken beaks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not really - they did eat it eventually but I could tell it was a last resort. this is a great idea in the winter ( but dont use ready brek ) :)

They work really well if you add breadcrumbs to the mix (and they don't break their beaks) LOL (f+
