Herron being chased away

Post by fabindia »

Something of a strange sight from my garden this morning.

I was out at about 7:30, letting the chickens out when I heard seagulls crying noisily overheard. When I looked up, there were three seagulls flying over but at the head of them was a crow and all four of them were chasing a herron. Although it only a few seconds before they all disappeared off, i am sure it was a herron, they are such graceful fliers, certainly compared with the much more flapping style of the crow. Never seen anything like this before.

Apart from being so huge, the way I can recognise a heron flying is the way the neck sort of folds.
Round our way, if a bird is being mobbed it's usually a buzzard, the crows really won't tolerate them near the nests.

I'd imagine a hungry heron could eat quite a few baby crows given the opportunity.
