cheetahs

Post by sandy »

only 7000 in the world on the news tonight predicting in 20 years they could be extinct! Apparently because people are having them as pets and not looking after them properly. So now they know about it why not ban them as pets immediately until it is too late!

But maybe that would just increase the price for illegal, smuggled animals.
Not read about it, where do they get them from.
License fees and regular compulsory vet checks if people MUST keep them (but why must they?) might be better if it was enforced worldwide. Big IF.

Like so many things, (ivory, cheap chicken dinners) its a battle between animal rights, people just wanting to make a living, those who see a big profit and consumer demand.

It is unfortunately not as simple as it would seem to simply ban the sale and capture of the beasts because there will be some who ignore the ban and others that accept bribes to look the other way and so on. Poverty on the base level, greed and corruption through the middle and government levels and extreme wealth on the top level all play their part. A gentleman with a lot of money made from oil wants one because it is seen as a status symbol then he will get one, because there is a demand there will be a supply. Arabia does seem to be the main end destination for the cheetah, and they have a lot of oil money. The Ladies of that area are also apparently buying the animals to “rescue” them but they are still feeding demand for them to be taken from the wild. On the plus side, cheetah have a very narrow gene pool already so they are unlikely to have problems with inbreeding later on.
