Are bantams quieter than hens?

Post by Sunny B »

My two brown hens are making such a lot of noise recently that I'm thinking about replacing them with bantams. (I live in a residential area, and although no-one's complained yet, I'm sure they will soon.)

Are they quieter? Or are there quiet breeds of bantam?

My chocolate Orpington bantam barely makes a peep but she is only 20 weeks old and hasn't come into lay yet.

Barry's an amber link, she's a bit of a screamer {rofwl}

My pekin bantams would at times be just as loud as my other girls, I guess all chickens tend to vocalise! :-D

Hello,
I have found them to be just as noisy, especially
when they have laid an egg. They want the whole world
to know.Would not give them up for anything. As for other
people complaining,if you do not have a cockerel i do not
think they will get very far.You try complaining about a noisy
dog,and you are told that is what they do,yes.but all DAY!!
Had a neighbour with said dog loose in garden. Not a
nasty dog,I would let it loose to ramble the fields, sure it enjoyed
itself,but no noise.
Would not worry about your chickens either.
LUCK

Mine are quiet. They make lovely little crooning noises and trills, and the loudest they get is when the dog startles them and even then it's not very loud. The cockerels I met when I went to get them were quiet, too, they crowed, of course, but it sounded as if it was coming from - well, down the lane!

No complaints even from the neighbour who is a bit of an old woman.

Seriously don't worry, get your neighbours involved. Donate them some freshly laid eggs, deliver in person and explain how your hens make a noise to let you know they have laid. Introduce the hens and say this is "Esmerelda"'s egg or whatever the name.

My neighbours love this and ask for a particular hen's eggs to be saved for them. (Schhh luckily lots are the same type and lay the same colour egg but I don't tell them that!).

We do not have a cockeral now but the general opinion was that it made people feel like they lived in the countryside.

If I have any noise complaints I explain why it happened so they are more understanding.

Good luck

hi Sunny B Sorry no, Bantams are no quieter. In fact my Sebright cockerel is the noisiest little... But he's lovely! I suggest you get a few more hens. Two are not really enough. They are probably lonely and restless which is why they are making a lot of noise. I think the belgian and dutch bantams are a touch quieter than most, and possibly laying hybrid hens, or even silkys.

As above, give the neighbours Eggs from time to time, they'll feel too guilty to say anything about noise, which I suspect sounds louder to you than it is to them.

My Banties are far more skitty than by normal hens, and just as noisy, my Rosecombs and Seabright are quiet, they just go tuck tuck tuck in a chatty sort of way :-D
