We have recently emptied one of our compost bins and found in excess of 100 acorns in it. Has anyone else experienced this and if so any answers as to what put them there? It cannot be squirrels as the gap is too narrow

Wendy, mice will store acorns and eat them during the winter/spring, so I guess you've just made some mice very cross.
