Can I ask Dave did your Springers do that to your lawn or your hens?! I'm only asking because ours is rapidly heading that way thanks mainly to my Springer!!

I am missing my lawn already. Never been that garden proud but it's always nice to have some grass in between your toes in the summer time. Can't believe yours is recovering at this time of year? I'm not quite sure what to do with mine yet, ie just leave it to the chickens and reconcile myself to not having any grass or cordon them off. The trouble is we have a very small garden and it's great seeing them free range around the small bit of space that my garden allows them. But maybe you are right, perhaps I can half the garden, half for them (sans grass) and half for me.

I have flock net, and enough orchard to move them around. They like to eat grass, but also scratch it up. Maybe lift a turf and hope they scratch there, and hope the hens can be on each patch for a short enough time not to wreck the grass, and off it for long enough to let it recover!
My problem is that all the trees mean I have to roll up all the netting every time I move it.

I agree that there's no sight quite like a hen setting off to explore, however much space they have they seem more jaunty when the are out.
