Pruning back an Acer
Re: Pruning back an AcerThanks for all the options.
I could go down the route of not going by any of the month's mentioned and see what happens, or I could just leave it over Winter and see what it's like then, which is what I think I will do. I guess it's a lot easier to identify dead branches and bad growth during mid summer whereas with the leaves not there, it's easier to do it. I shall remain politely neutral for the moment. Interesting the variations on a theme. Normally I don't take much notice of when I prune things. To me, if you can't eat it, it's in the way But the Acer is my exception to the rule. The sunset shining through on a late September / October day is beyond belief. The leaves usually hang on til about the first or second week in November. Thanks, Richard New Member? Re: Pruning back an AcerI just love them and have had many over the years. The more unusual ones are the best but it is finding them.
Re: Pruning back an AcerSo whose stately home garden were you posing for that photo in front of some sort of bush?
Suzy Re: Pruning back an AcerRichard it is a lovely specimen.
It is called Acer palmatum dissectum atropurpureum. (I used to work for Hilliers Nursery) Don't just trim it or give it a haircut, that will result in lots of ugly regrowth at the cut ends like witches brooms. If you need to take some off then take out back to a junction of branches. Quand je serai vieille je vais vivre en France

No it won't! It is in it's prime (like you)and won't get much bigger either. Quand je serai vieille je vais vivre en France

Re: Pruning back an AcerI would prune it between 1st April and 31st March.
Sorry, I know nothing about prunes. Relax, I could have been a twin.
