how to grow Leeks?

Post by rachell24 »

Just about to sow mine (probably a bit late but hey never mind)

I've never sown them before and it all sound a bit fiddly. says on the packet to sow them in the ground then when they've grown transplant them somewhere else into little holes but dont fill them in just water them.

I've not really got enough space to waste on a row them move them somewhere else. Could I grow them in pots to start off and then put them in their final positions, or would pots not be long enough for the roots?

Yes you can grow them in pots and then when they are about 4- 6 weeks (about 7' tall) you can transplant them - when there are no more frosts.
Make them a hole and you can plant them so there's a couple of inches of the seedling showing above ground. Don't pack the soil in around them just pull it around the plant and then water it and that will let the soil settle enough around it.
