Hazel
Could you correct me if I am wrong but it would seem that for production one tree is planted and left to grow with others around so that a form of cross pollination occurs, as each tree has both flower and catkin. The other type as used a lot by the older folks was Hazel that was used for coppice and of course all the uses that entails, including being very useful firewood. Q How does one recognise the different Hazel tree's?

I bought my Willow from a source that claims that it grows goodness knows how many feet a day, I think you may know who I mean. It doesn't of course, because it all depends on the soil and if you have time to keep cleaning around the base. Is this the type of willow you are talking about?
I hope you have a pleasant journey through life.

Maybe this old poem will help.

Birchwood fires burn bright and clear
If the logs are kept a year
Store your Beech for Christmas tide
With new holly laid beside
Chestnuts only good they say
If for years tis stored away
Birch and Fir logs burn too fast
Blaze too bright and do not last
Flames from Larch will shoot up high
Dangerously the sparks will fly
But Ashwood green and Ashwood brown
Are fit for a Queen with a golden crown.

Oaken logs, if dry and old
Keep away the winters cold
Poplar gives a bitter smoke
Fills your eyes and makes you choke
Elmwood burns like churchyard mould
Even the very flames burn cold
Hawthorn bakes the sweetest bread
So it is in Ireland said
Applewod will scent the room
Pearwood smells like a flower in bloom
But Ashwood wet and Ashwood dry
A King may warm his slippers by.
I am now a widow and live with my memories.

Another poem about logs.

LOGS

Oak logs will warm you well.
That are old and dry;
Logs of pine will sweetly smell
But sparks will fly.

Birch-logs will burn too fast,
Chestnuts scarce at all;
Hawthorne-logs are good to last
Cut them in the fall.

Holly-logs will burn like wax,
You may burn them green
Elm-logs like to smouldering flax,
No flame to be seen.

Beech-logs for winter time,
Yew logs as well,
Green elder logs are a crime
for any man to sell.

Pear-logs and apple-logs,
They will scent your room,
Cherry-Logs across the dogs
Smell like flower of broom.

Ash-logs, smooth and grey,
Burn them green and old,
Buy up all that come your way
Their worth their weight in gold.

I love these poems, which seem to have a nostalgic feel about them. I have to buy most of my logs, which do burn lovely and warm. It would be so nice to have fruit wood in amongst them for their scent.

They're grubbing up an apple orchard at the back of ours about 1,000 trees.
I might pop up and ask if I can have some.

Hope they say yes as apple wood burn lovely. Just the right time to start a store for next year. )t' I must say that it is a shame that the orchards are disappearing. Kent was known for it orchards and the spring used to be a beautiful time there.

Buy the orchard )t'
I assume this is another English orchard gone out of business, with land being sold for building. {cry}

I don't think so as it is one of about seven orchards of different fruits all on one farm. All the other orchards are OK so I think they are just grubbing up an oldish one to replant.
