Black Fly and Weather?

Post by Richard »

Anyone noticed a big decrease in Black Fly since we had all the rain and wind.

I had a problem about 4/5 weeks ago, but now nothing.

Black Fly and Weather?

Same here Richard, we are expecting chocolate spot on the broad beans though as the rain splashes upwards from the ground. The sweetcorn is spectacular with all the rain and each one has 2 cobs.
Potatoes are a bit slug damaged, tomatoes and cabbages are looking very healthy. Poor courgettes have been grossly over watered - never mind we might yet have some sun. Oh yes, we have 12 boxes of onions in the conservatory drying out.

My sweet corn are only knee high still. The Squash are hardly moving as well.

The Broad Beans and Runner Beans are looking very good.

I was a bit behind in sowing this year though.

Yes, I was envious of the sweetcorn. Ours aren't that far on. We've not grown them before. The runners have flowers but don't seem to be setting. We are in between early and late peas, so back to Birds-Eye. Same with broad beans, but we've got some of last years. And in spuds are hard to find in all this mud!

black fly

Post by melons »

I don't grow many vegies, but I had horrendous black fly in May on some plants by the pond, they've all gone now though, a pal of mine said to rot down some nettles in a big bottle of water, then spray the plants with that, that should get rid of them, not tried it yet, I don't like spraying anything with pesticides, especially by the pond!
Has anyone else heard of this little tip?????
I was power blasting them off into the pond with the hose pipe for the fish.
Cheers
