pea gravel

Post by mrs boodles »

I am after a bit of advice please. I am clearing an area that has pea gravel on it and under that tarpaulin, I want to make a veg bed in its place for growing courgettes. I have managed to get most of the gravel off of it but would like to know if what is left will do any harm if I dig it in to this border. Our soil is pretty heavy, so am thinking clay.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Pea gravel shouldn't do any harm to the soil - the problem will be if in the future you want to grow root veg such as carrots and parsnips and the leader root comes across an obstruction. That's when they tend to fang or grow round the obstruction producing misshaped roots. Other than that, I see no problem.

Agree, always think a bit of grit or stone adds good drainage.
