Plumming the prunes

Post by Mo »

Its time to thin the fruit and prune the plum trees again.
I started, but then the forecast for 'scattered showers' come true so I've come in for lunch with the laners.
Seems quite a managable crop this year. Not bare branches like last year, but not bunches of grapes that will take forever to thin or break the branches if I don't. Not vast crop of greengages, but I'm amazed we still have that tree, it has been dieing for 20 years.

The books say that small Victoria plums have much less flavour than big ones and we've found that - just imagine one the size of an egg, warm, ripe and tasty.
I've done the lower branches on 2 of our 4 trees. More than half filled a gallon tub with little plums. and a wheelbarrow with dead and crossing branches, then ran out of puff.
Got to save some energy for tonight's dancing.
