Not an expert but I have come across them before - aka Japanese Maple - with really spectacular autumn leaf colours. I believe Richard has a beautiful one in his garden (I think I saw it in the gyo diary video)

Well,OH bought 2 earlier this summer. Got them in the right compost. Kept them nice and moist with rain water only. Both have grown and are doing well. One has shot up more than the other. Apparently they lose their leaves Semtemberish. Wanted to ask when to prune as they are both getting "very leggy".

Can you give their names. Or post some photos, of the overall tree and of the leaf. Although japanese acers are the ones that first spring to mind there are many kinds from the huge sycamores to tiny dwarfs, all officially Acer family.

In general you should not prune them. If they are japanese acers then keeping in light shade is advisable.
