Whats the name of the black sheeting and is it any good?

Post by springkell »

Hi having dug our veg beds ready for next year I want to prevent weeds coming through and was thinking about using some of the black sheeting I've seen in other gardens.
What is it called, has anyone used it and do you recommend it or are there better ways of keeping the weeds away?
We live on the west coast of scotland and the winter months go on, so by the time we come to plant the weeds are upon us again.
Thanks for any advice.

Hi

The official name for it is "semi-permeable membrane" and can be bought in any large garden centre or DIY chain. :-D

We use it on our flower beds. It stops the really big weeds growing through. However it tends to blow away so we have put shingle on top of our to hold it in place. Dirt and old leaves then compost on top of the shingle and then the weeds grow in that  but it does make it a bit easier to get them up. If you were removing it after the winter, it shouldn't be a problem :-D

Hope this helps
