I plant Desiree as my main crop potatoes mainly because it has a thick skin which helps deter slugs (although some years you wouldnt think so :-D )

Whoops just had to edit due to me forgetting my manners  Welome to the lane :-D

welcome from me too )wav(

Desiree is a good choice as HappyBob suggested because of slugs. A lot of people go for King Edwards or Maris Piper because they sounds familiar but I found both of those to be slug food. Romano is very similar to Desiree (they are related) and is a lot more disease resistant. Rooster is another good one too (... just noticed they are all red skinned potatoes LOL)

To be honest, I don't bother with main crop anymore and grow second earlies instead for a number of reason mainly because (1) supermarket potatoes are not expensive given how much time, effort and money you have to put into growing them and (2) commercial potatoes are treated to prevent them sprouting during storage and home grown on the other hand start to sprout in late winter so won't keep.

)wav( Hi!

We all seem in accord with Desiree!
Bought some Wilja second earlies from 100p-land, never heard of them. >shrug<

My take on it is, I have three raised beds, I get three packets of seed potatoes, any kind, from the £1 shop, plant 'em and see what comes up. :-D Usually get good results. >veg<

Welcome.
Our local hardware shop has seed spuds in sacks so I get a few Arran pilot as fast growing first earlies, Sharps Express because we like the flavour - but if they are allowed to grow bigger than tiny new potato size I steam them as they break up if boiled. The Edwards, also for flavour, as maincrop. last year they'd sold out of Arran Pilot and we bought Rocket, but they taste of nothing, so won't get them again.
