Hi,

One year old soot is good, many Chimney Sweeps drop it off at Allotments.
Just encircle the plant - do not get any on the leaf. )t'

Eggshells, anything sharp.

I go out every night with a torch and scoop them up with a spoon, and relocate them to pastures new, the surrounding gardens, erm, at speed and as far away as possible. No doubt some of them come back, but at least there aren't so many of them.

Copper bands can be bought in cheap shops. Obviously cost an arm and a leg in Garden centre. Put one round each bean when you plant them. I've found they are the best deterrent.
