Another dog walk, another mystery tree!

Post by jemberelli »

Apologies for asking for identification yet again! Another dog walk in the sun today at Haughmond Hill Forestry Commission has seen me puzzling over yet another tree!

Looks to me like some sort of nut tree, but I could be completely wrong as truthfully, I have no idea {rofwl}

It's a Beech with it's seed pods (Beech Mast) on it. Pigs love 'em. )t'
They taste a bit like Hazel nuts but are smaller.

Thanks again Dom! Helen, that's as much as I had figured too - trying (and failing) to sound like I knew what I was talking about to hubby " oh it's definitely a nut! Not sure which, will take a piccy and ask on The Lane!"

Yes, definitely beech. The nuts are edible apparently (did they used to use roasted nuts as a coffee substitute in the war?)

We used to peel and eat those at school - lucky they weren't poisonous because we never thought to check with an adult yike*
