Should my raspberry canes be sprouting?

Post by Mo »

I planted a row of canes in January, pruned then down to a foot as the instructions said. I waited for a frost free day to go and buy / plant them. They were on display outside the nursery.

There is no sign of growth and the bits I pruned look dead.

How long do I wait before I go back and complain?

did you scrape the bark away to see if it is still "green" underneath? I think well established raspberries may show some signs of life by now but with recent planting and pruning, they may take longer - despite the occasional warm spells of sunshine, early spring weather is below average temperature for this time of year so will take even longer before coming through. I think patience may be required but I do understand it when you have bought plants and are waiting ....

They look as if they are dieing back from the cuts.

Our new house has a little border with 5 rasp canes against a wall. Do I need to do anything with them other than make sure they are supported as they grow? Good luck with yours Mo, hope they come good!

I just remembered that raspberries send shoots up from ground level (that's how it spreads) so you are probably not going to see any budding on the cane.

I didn't make a fuss with my (summer fruiting) raspberries and just let them get on with it and had loads of fruit, but there is apparently a right way of going about it - RHS guide to growing raspberries might be helpful

Mine are just sending up lovely healthy shoots from the ground. As for supporting the canes. It depends what type of raspberry you have. We have a couple of later fruiting bush variety which need no support and ordinary earlier canes which are tied in to supports each year.

Thanks June. I have no idea what they are so will just keep an eye on them as they grow.

Ah, 3 of them now have shoots. Perhaps they've survived.
