Apple tree in blossom!

Post by fabindia »

Went down the bottom of the garden this morning to check the bees and my apple trees and was surprised to find blossom on one of the trees. Must be fooled by the exceptionally mild weather for the time of year :-D Admittedly only a couple of flowers but still strange too see.

Picture to follow.

You often get a few flowers on various trees & shrubs at the 'wrong' time of year because the days are the same length as the time they should be flowering. Lammas buds.

Things that usually bloom in March often have a few flowers in Sept.

Our rambler rose is flowering again, my neighbour's ceanothus is in flower, and she has buds on her magnolia! Even the coastal winds and fogs have not dampened the blooms.

What red apples. What sort are they?
It does look odd. I expect I'll have some flowers on my forsythia, but that will be later, because they flower earlier IYSWIM.

The variety is a Tom Putt, a pretty versatile variety that can be used as a cooker, cider apple or, if you like a sharp apple, as an eater. They are very red, and even its flesh has a pink tingle.

I friend at work had a tree but he didn't know what variety it was. He had so many apples a couple of years back, before he moved house, that we stripped the tree of all the remaining apples and I made him cider. With the pink flesh, even the cider had a pink tinge and was very palatable.

I looked on the internet and found that Tom Putt seemed to be the closest I could find. My tree has only been in a couple of years so I won't get a great crop this year but do have small crop to go towards this year's cider.
