Anyone had success with butternut squash?

Post by fabindia »

I have some really large butternut squash plants in the greenhouse which I grew from seeds from a squash we had bought. They have lots of nice green leaves but no flowers so far, so just wondering if that is all I will get.

No idea, Michael. Never tried to grow butternut squash, but have got 3 squash plants that are flowering, not sure what type. Is butternut squash the only squash? I am a complete DER with squashes as you can maybe tell.

I'm sure there must be lots of different sorts of squash. Not really sure but aren't pumpkins, squash, and courgettes part of the same family? My butternut squash plants look a lot like courgettes.

There are loads of different squashes. I have never tried but my neighbours who have an amazing veg.plot grow them outside by the dozen. I would do a bit of googling.

Have you tried feeding it? A tomato feed would do but am sure others will have the perfect one.

If you grew it from a bought squash it may not be genetically the same as the seed the squash grew from.
A bought seed is carefully pollinated, either an Fi hybrid or a strain that will breed true when grown amongst its own sort. A self saved seed is lucky dip. Like planting an apple pip. You sometimes get a winner (Cox's Orange Pippin) more often nearer to a crab apple.

Looks like I'm having no success :-(

The plants look rather like courgettes but although I have had lots of growth and in fact lots of yellow flowers I can't see any squash developing. They are in the greenhouse but obviously need something more.

Have you tried hand-pollinating the flowers.

I hadn't thought of that - might be worth a try though it is getting late in the growing season. The greenhouse door is left open and insects do get in and out and the tomatoes are all fine.
