This year I tried runner bean 'White Lady' for the first time. Stringless, crisp and plentiful. I will definately go for this one again next year.

Early potatoes. I grew Pentland Javelin for the first time for quite a few years. Dug up the last row today which is rather late. Totally unblemished. Another one to repeat.

This has not been a good year for tomatoes so far. I could not find Sungold this year which is an excellent, sweet tomato, so I went for a relative: Sungella. A big disappointment - not to be repeated. Fortunately I have a couple of other regular varieties on the go so all is not lost.

Are there particular vegetable varieties others recommned?

We love the taste of Sharpes Express as a second early spud.
But it is hard to find it, and a 2kg pack is too big, because if you let them grow big they fall to bits when you cook them. We partly got round that this year by sucessional planting. It's not immune to blight, but I don't know what is.

I'm going to try some of the potato varieties here: http://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/todo_now/faqs.php?id=10

I was impressed by "greyhound" cabbages this year. Nice young as greens and good sized heads now.

Don't you steam your vegetables? I always used to find that at a certain time of year the potatoes ended up like 'soup', since we have steamed now for a lot of years this never happens - it also saves fuel as you only use one ring.

Thanks! That worked fine. Now why didn't I think of that?

Eventually got the catalogue out....
Sweetcorn Kelvedon Glory Excellent
Calabrese Tiara F1 Excellent
Broad beans Express Excellent
Dwarf beans Speedy Excellent
Runner beans Butler Excellent

Everything else mediocre usually have a freezer full of tomatoes by now and there's about 6 worth picking.
Have got to find savoury recipes for plums as we have loads.
