I was dipping in to this book by Richard Mabey (of Food for Free fame) again today. It came out a few years ago now but is full of the background, folk lore, uses etc of British native plants. It is not a text book or identification book but has lots of stories about the plants and how they have been used and viewed in history. It really is an interesting book, not to read from cover to cover, but for opening up at random or looking something up. It provides a good understanding of what might just otherwise be considered another weed. It is still in print but I am sure a second hand copy could be got hold of at a reasonable price if you come across it.
