Round or pointy end up?

Post by lancashire lass »

Well, I was a bit surprised to learn that most people sit their boiled egg in the egg cup with the pointy end up - have I been doing it wrong this 50+ years? yike* It looks more natural for me to have the rounded end on top and I've never had a problem of an egg toppling out of the egg cup.

Having saying all that, I prefer poached eggs anyway .... )t'

I have not had a boiled egg for ages but I have always gone for the round end up as that is where the air sac is so you get the best "crunching" sound when you hit it!

The next question is.... does anyone put a pin prick in the rounded end of an egg prior to hard boiling it?

I'm a poached preferer too although if I have a soft boiled egg I do tend to put it big end down (probably because most of my egg cups are quite wide)...unless it's a giant one then it goes pointy end down ...I put it whichever way it fits best in the egg cup to be honest.

I never did anything to the shell when I used to pan boil though when I bought the little egg cooker, the measuring cup for water to go in the heating pan (to adjust whether you want a soft, medium or hard boiled) has a little pin in the underside should you boil (or rather, steam) whole eggs (I only use mine for poached eggs so haven't used it)
