Brazil nut mysteryBrazil nut mysteryWhy can't you buy them any more?
its to do with a mould!!
its was on radio two the other week go onto chris evens page on radio's two web site it was his cooking slot on a thursday he was talking about it i think that was barazil nuts i know it was about a nut !! "The trouble with quotes over the Internet is that you never know if they are genuine." -- Abraham Lincoln
We still get them here in Aus....
Re mould - is that aflatoxins (spelling????) - i think it can be a problem with nuts that are stored incorrectly. I think i heard of it in relation to peanuts but i might be wrong. Of course there might have been a big batch of UK brazil nuts affected and i'm sure i wouldnt know about it! Searching the BBC website says thats what it is, and blames Europe. It says (whatever you said) can be on the shell, so each batch has to be tested, if sold in the shells. And the level set is very low (lower than the US level), so no-one sells them now. But you can buy them without their shells. THis was a n old piece, but is probably still relevant.
I don't eat nuts myself, but half the fun of Christmas, for OH, is buying a big bag of Walnuts, and one or Brazils, and sitting cracking and eating.
Son of Morris sells them, either standard or organic although I do believe that no one has ever cultivated the tree with any success; apparently it is reliant on lots of other species in order for it to survive. Therefore the nuts have to be collected from the forest before the pigs and antelope get to them. I can’t see what the difference between the organic and normal is except for the price.
Bah Humbug
Brazil nuts,it is a shame you cant get them anymore(in shell that is) although i could never get the b**g**rs out of the shell anyway.Id try to crack one open then spend half an hour trying to scrape the nut out with my teeth as it was stuck to the shell!Dont even get me started on trying to get into an almond!! AAhh christmas day memories andrea
