My daughter, just turned 10, is five feet tall. She eats more than I do (and that's a fair bit) and I would feel guilty if I had paid a children's price for her.

We haven't ever come up against this issue as we haven't visited buffet style places. When she orders form a menu, she always has an adult size portion so I think it would be entirely reasonable for her to pay for the food she has eaten. She, and her younger brother, stopped ordering 'children's meals' quite a while ago as there just wasn't enough food for them. Not to mention the fact that it is usually 'nuggets and chips', which they don't want to eat.

I don't think it's fair to call the restaurant 'penny pinching', it is a business and they are trying to make money - it's not a scheme arranged so that the public can try to out-smart them. They should, however, have displayed the pricing conditions so that customers can make an informed choice about whether to eat there.

I think restaurants use the kids deal for marketing reasons.

Why can't they do the sensible thing and offer light bites so those with a smaller appetite can order a smaller meal.

That includes smaller children, pensioners and those whole don't want over facing are are not too hungry.

Sometimes I go to my local and don't want to pay £8 - £10 for a big meal.

The "Lite Bites" does be just right at around £4 for a liver bacon and mash or a small fish and chips with peas.

I think the restaurant got it wrong, as they should have advertised prices by height, not age. Obviously it would be common sense for parents of tall kids to carry proof of their age, as generally the taller you are the older you are. I very occaisionally eat at a buffet style chinese restaurant(loads of vege options and fresh in front of your eyes cooked seafood). They charge by height.

I am right with you Sharon

If a meal is advertised as a Child's meal then that is what it should be - irrespective of height! I took my two children out to a well known pizza place yesterday for their buffet lunch. It was my son's 12th birthday so we had his best friend with us too. I ordered 3 child's buffet lunches. My kids had 3 slices of pizza each but his friend ate 12 slices, garlic bread and pasta! I was a bit embarrassed about the amount he ate, considering it was a child's price (he's bigger than me!). But he IS only 11. Restaurants should take the view that "You win some, you lose some" It's probably all swings and roundabouts with buffet type meals.
