Granola

Post by HedgeHugger »

Anybody tried making their own?
We do go through a fair bit of various cereal crunchy type goodies. Granola is horribly expensive. You can get cheaper crunch type cereals from just about all the supermarkets, but we've been finding them overly sweet recently.

So I decided to give it a go.
I rounded up a few recipes online and opted for one on Nigella Lawson's site.

It is pretty expensive to make, but we tend to have all the ingredients in anyway. We do buy a lot of nuts, seeds, dried fruit etc.
The apple sauce was freshly made with some of last years frozen apples (very frugal! :) ).
I only used 200g of almonds.
No rice syrup so used a combo of malt extract and golden syrup.
No sesame seeds, so used Linseed instead.
Fruit was a combo of dried cranberries, sultanas and raisins.
No brown sugar in, so used white and cut the amount to 70g rather than the 100g.

It cooked quicker than expected and needed frequent turning, it browned pretty quickly.
It made around a kilo and a half, so we'll be granola'd up for the next month or so.
Will definitely give it another go.
