Anybody aware of - The National parrot sanctuary ?

Post by lou »

Its in skegness - my in laws are going this weekend to see if father in law likes it, for their two affrican greys, if he doesn't looks like i am having a avairy built in my garden and i will be the new (but relcuctant) mother of two parrots

Plan is if the latter happens then they will have a avairy built in their garden and they will get climatised (and have heated house) then next year they will have one built in our garden (oh to have their money) and we will take on the birds. As they are retiring and traveling indeffanately (sp?)

Fingers crossed father in law like the sanctuary, got a dvd of it, they will have such a better life than cooped up with us

Oh Lou.
Please do not have them if you will be reluctant.
Also if they are inside birds. They will not take to an aviary and be sad little parrots.
Lets hope the santuary takes and rehomes them if they are not aviary birds.

I know wendy, i know.
I am praying he will go for this sanctuary its looks fantastic.
I can't see how it would work having them in the house, with the kids and cat and dog they wont get to spend anytime out of the cage till evening, i have put my animals and kids first or am i being selfish.
The avairy hopefully would work, they will have to see how they take to it of course if they don't ...well i don't know!
I will love having them, i am just reluctant because i feel they should be going to this sanctuary they don't rehome them its open to the public a few times a month that sort of place, poor birds they never asked for all this!

No Lou,
You are not being selfish at all. For all concerned you must put your family first. Because if you don't you will constantly be in turmoil. Worrying that they should have more out of cage time and equally that the children/family are being put second. With the likelyhood the birds will suffer
As you say poor little birds, they haven't asked for that. This is why I urge people to think very hard before getting a parrot. If there is ever a thought that you would like to travel once you have retired then don't get one.
They get very bonded, they have the intelligence of a 5 year old child. Imagine doing that to a kiddie of that age. It just isn't fair.
As I have said I worry now about my two when I die. They know the person they will go to. But it isn't me, I am the center of their lives and I know that. My poor Coco has already been abandoned at 13 years old. I hate the thought that I will do that to her again and my darling Indiana who I have had from a 16 week old baby.
I do say I don't want to go. But I think Him upstairs has other ideas.

I have just been reading an article in BBC wildlife magazine about the negative impact that rose collard parakeets have been having on nuthatches, tawny owls and other indigenous species as well as the destruction to crops etc. yet another domestic pet that is wiping out our wild life; there are more parakeets than kingfishers now. How mad is that?

You are right SS.
I was on the RSPB bird watch and on the page of birds you see a lot, was a ring necked parrot. I had to go onto another page to register a Jay ??
This is the trouble. When people are fed up with them. Some just turn them out. With this outcome.
