Opening a dogs mouth

Post by wendy »

Further to another post I thought this might help.
Opening the dogs mouth can be a problem sometimes, but if you train the dog before you need to do it, it helps.
If you slip, either your finger or thumb behind the long canine tooth and touch the roof of the mouth, the dog will open his mouth.
No need to force the mouth open and no need to cover the eyes. Both of which can frighten the dog.
To start with As soon as the mouth opens, I slip in a treat and say open. Gradually the dog realises if you say open his mouth is going to be opened. Handy for when you go to the vet etc. etc.

I'd never heard that before Wendy so it's good to know. I brush Daisy's teeth every day and some days she isn't too keen and it's only after I've managed to get toothpaste all over her nose that she opens her mouth as she tries to lick it off so I can then get my finger in :oops:

I'm sure that I won't be the only one who has had this problem at some time. Thank's Wendy for the tip which I will pass on. I will try it on Megan, just to make sure I can do it in case it's needed in the future )t'

That would be good for a young dog but not with our Tessa.......she lives by the saying 'you can't teach an old dog new tricks'....!!!! }hairout{

Have heard something similar, Wendy. It was to 'tickle' the roof of the mouth with your finger. LOL Same meat, different gravy I presume.
