Dogs & grapes. cats hens & ???

Post by Mo »

Is it true that raisins can kill dogs if they steal fruit cake? I'd heard that they shouldn't be allowed to cadge chocolate.

What else should we be wary of with our pets. My cat likes to steal Marmite.

Yes, grapes and associated products are poisonous to dogs.
Same with our chocolate. One of my clients dog stole her Easter egg [how much chocolate in those :? She nearly lost him and he was on a drip for nearly a week.
I would think grapes were OK for chooks but chocolate would be a no no as well.
Dunno about cats, perhaps someone can help out with that one.

Strange. You'd think that what was good for us would be OK for other mammals.
Are there any other things that we need warning about.
E.g. can the hens finish up the cat food.
I have something in the back of my mind that some animal medicines are poison to other species.

I somehow don't imagine a cat would eat grapes, though we had one that went mad for cucumber*

*cue for the story of OH's first visit to my parents, he doesn't much like cucumber but does cover his food in pepper, cat thought a nasty trick had been played on him.

Cat food is OK for chooks, as long as it isn't chicken :? Although I don't think D.EFRA would be happy.
There are a number of human foods not good for dogs onions being one. The internet would be the place to look.
Medicines are a different matter. I think only a vet could tell you about those.

My hens go mad for grapes. We have a black grape vine over the patio and my chooks will them to fall down. The noise that they make when they do, has to be heard to be believed. I don't know if the pips get eaten or not but they have kept very well on them.
I am now a widow and live with my memories.

We have a list up at work of things which are toxic to dogs and can prove fatal.

Toxic to dogs are grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, daffodil bulbs, some mushrooms, certain foods containing sweeteners (cannot remember name of sweetener, begins with a z??) and chocolate.

The more purer the chocolate the more dangerous it can be for your dog. We had a dog in that ate a bulb of garlic and it ended up on a drip - happily doggie was OK in the end. Have seen dogs in after eating selection boxes and boxes of chocolates - ended up a bit messy due to nature of treatment, but survived.

We've had people giving their dog human medications and using antiseptic treatments and making their pets ill. Another no-no - don't use baby shampoo or human shampoo on your dog, always use dog shampoo.

Cats - have seen a cat die after having ingested petals from lilies.

If in doubt always phone your vets for advice if you have any concerns.
