How can I help to rehome a dog

Post by Mercedes »

I had a friend ask me today if I could give her some advice about her bf rehoming his Staffie dog. She has been in touch with Battersea Dog's Home and the RSPCA and neither can take her in.

Lily is about 4/5yrs old and not very well socialised as her owner is a bit of a headcase and hasn't done much to socialise or train her, which I know is going to put people off wanting to take her on.

Also my friend thinks she may be having puppies as her own dog mated with Lily just recently when she thinks she may have still been in season.

Some people really shouldn't take on dogs but I do feel for her as it's not her fault that she was bought by some feckless idiot :?

How Bl**dy irresponsible.....puppies!
Why keep one dog and get rid of the bitch...is it because he thinks she is pregnant.?
This time of year dogs are being cast aside left, right and centre. Have a look at my FB page.
There is no room at the inn for any dogs in rescue at the moment and staffies are two a penny. If she goes into one of the rescue's she is quite certain to be put down. There many, many good kind staffies out there needing homes. They cannot take one in that is under socialised.
Private adverts aren't going to get the type of person any of us want for Lily. Offering her free to a good home will get her used. Either as a puppy machine or worse still as bait in the fighting ring.
Staffies on their own, without a responsible owner, do not stand any chance at all.
If he cannot keep her, it will be responsible if he takes her to put her down. As that will be better than bred, or fought to death.
Do I sound bitter Lynn..... well I blooming well am. I sat and cried last night over all the sad little eyes looking at me, wanting homes......all staffies and I do not own a staffy, never will want to own a staff, as they are not my type of breed. But they are gorgeous, sunny little dogs who do not deserve dickheads that buy them.
Sorry rant over.
If he wants to get her neutered even though she is pregnant he can and if he wants to bring Lily to my classes we will try to do the best for her.

Wendy has said it all. Is bf meaning boy friend? If so, why is she with him? Tell her to dump the bf and keep the dog. Get the possible pups aborted and dog neutered, and start taking it out for walks to socialise it. Either that, or frog march the bf and dog to the vet and have it put down. No one will rehome it, the rescues are full of them. Poor dog, what did it do to deserve an ******** like that.

Totally, totally, agree with Wendy on this one, Mercedes.

Given the number of dogs in rescue at any one time I think it would be kinder for her to be pts rather than risk her being passed from pillar to post and eventually being classed as a dangerous dog. From my knowledge of Staffies they do not do kennels well either so would make her even more of a problem to rehome.

I truly detest anyone who takes a dog on and then just like the Christmas paper they are thrown away with the rubbish when there is the slightest problem or the novelty wears off. Despicable people imho.

Sorry, but I have turned this into a bit of a rant and I do appreciate it is not your fault, Mercedes, so have a {hug} from me.

The whole situation makes me feel very sad and also very cross too. My friend, who like me suffers with anxiety and agoraphobia took on a collie rescue dog some months ago as it was born with some deformity to one of it's feet so was no use to the farm where it had been bred, so there is no way she can take on Lily too.

Her boyfriend, and I use that term lightly, just uses my friend to look after Lily while he goes out boozing and taking dr-ugs, all of which is really bad. It was when my friend was looking after Lily that her own dog did the deed with Lily and she has told her bf that he should take her to the PDSA to get an injection to abort any possible puppies but he won't listen to her advice and she can't take Lily herself. I'm not totally sure why she hasn't had her own dog castrated yet as obviously that would have meant Lily wouldn't have been able to get pregnant in the first place :?

You do wonder about people at times :?

Well BF would be gone and Lily would be getting done, If I was in her position.
If he doesn't want her and your friend has looked after her for this long. Tell him to sign her over and sling his hook. No man is worth the aggravation that he obviously is. Total waster.

I can just see the picture now, thinks he is a 'hard' person, gets a 'hard' dog and then cant be *rsed. Makes my blood boil.

Got to ask this though, if your friend cannot go out how does she exercise the Collie she took on. I understand Collies to need a lot of mental and physical stimulation more so than lots of other dogs from what I have read.

How is Daisy getting on with the raw food now, Mercedes? Sorry )ot:

I've managed to get some links for rescue homes in the Kent area from a group on fb, but quite honestly I don't see him having much success as obviously these places are full of dogs looking for new homes which will be easier to rehome.

My friend doesn't live with this waste of a space man, I think he lives in the same road as her and self medicates all the time due to mental illness, which seems to be quite common these days :?

Gwen I did wonder myself when my friend took on George the collie and did keep telling her that they need a lot of exercise. However she had just lost a rescue dog to old age and was very down and saw him advertised on preloved! She does manage to get out with him every day and he seems to be getting on okay with her but the bottom line is she really can't give him the amount of exercise he really needs, but people don't listen do they {warn}

Daisy is getting on very well with her raw food and I would never go back to a processed diet again. She really is ideal for me as she is such an easy dog to look after. I manage to take her out a couple of times a day on my own and she gets a good walk in the evening, but when the weather is really bad she is quite content to just go in the garden, which is good :-D

Yes, the bf should definitely be put down.
