What is it with cats and hiding places?

Post by bluebell »

Since starting work in our house in May of this year, Toby Lund, our cat, has discovered many new places to lounge about in.

Has spent the last month lying on top of the new fridge/freezer (still boxed). This week I emptied the fitted wine racks in kitchen (as this kitchen coming out this week). Before that his favourite place was on top of the boiler, but that got ripped out a few weeks ago.

Last night couldn't find Toby Lund anywhere, little minx was asleep in the wine rack, with just his head poking out!! He has a thing about cardboard boxes, paper carrier bags, handbags and does sleep in the Christmas tree over Christmas period.

Funny creatures, aren't they?

My Cat Jack is nearly 18, he hasnt been to good lately Bless him!

His fav place is the fruit basket on the dining room table!

He fits himself inbetween apples and bananas, i dont have the heart to take him out so i am now using a glass bowl instead!

Mine all live outside in the farm buildings, but they adore a cardboard box .....even tiny ones, they will squeeze in, and settle down. At the moment, I have a cat that sleeps in a cardboard box, but 6 hens lay in there as well ......no squashed eggs so far!!!

My friend has two of my kittens, who are now about a year old. She was going to bed one night and could hear a cat .....searched the bedroom, en suite, opened the window, as cat has a habit of trying to come in via the window ......sat on the bed and listened again. Then she twigged - opened her knicker drawer and there was the cat!!! She said it must have gone in before she left for work, she shut the drawer not knowing, and it would have been asleep all day. Its a wonder it had not suffocated!!!

Mine also love the fruit basket, drawers and windowsills (not the most cosy place but hey ho..)
One 'hiding place' the memory of which still makes me feel physically sick - was the tumble drier - I half loaded it, went to get more washing, popped it in and turned the drier on.. Tuppence one of our kittens, had jumped inside and spent 10 - 15 minutes in the dryer on full heat.. Once I notice the thudding I opened the door to find a very very sick kitten.. It was horrific, we took her outside and layed her on the cold stone slabs, kept syringing water into her mouth , called the vet who said there was nothing more that we could do bar keeping on with what we were doing already.. She was walking within the hour and recovered amazingly quickly, her pads were burned but healed well with care.. and she was back to completely normal within weeks..
After that I never ever turned on the tumble drier without double and triple checking by taking the washing out and replacing it, and have now got rid of it..
I recon she lost eight of her nine lives that day, but has grown into a lovely little minx..
Sorry if this story isn't pleasant, but I hope it has the effect of saving other cats from the same horrible experience..

Perhaps he is using an RSPB bag as a lure for a feathery playmate - like the cartoon garfield, when he filled his mouth with water and pretended to be a bird bath LoL
