Californian rabbits

Post by Trev62 »

We have had these lovely little Californian rabbits for over a week now and they are so different from our house rabbit Percy. They are pets but have been brought to breed from (when old enough) to give a supply of rabbit meat for us, sounds rather callous but it is just another rung up the ladder of self sufficiency. They have the run of the garden with all the other animals (though at separate times at present) and currently reside in the barn at night though we are in the process of making a dual wire cage for them to live in the porch once the cooler weather arrives. They are so friendly it is unbelievable and happily come to be fussed by us or slurped on by a dog! I know not everyone would approve of this but I remember seeing rabbits, hares, pheasants etc hung up outside butchers shops when growing up and it was just part and parcel of life at the time.

Well no-one who eats meat should disapprove. Though maybe it wouldn't be wise to let the offspring get too friendly.
And I know I am less of a carnivore since keeping hens.
