Last Thursday my vet bit the bullet and left the dressings off.
So I have been cleaning twice daily and putting manuka honey on. Watching like a hawk and putting a muzzle on when I wasn't by his side.
Went back today 5 days later ! and Glen is so pleased. The wound measured 25 x 20 mm last week and today it is 17 x 15. The most progress we have seen.
Also after having my dog nearly 5 weeks. I was given permission to road walk for 15 minutes.
So I drove in the drive got him out and went straight for a walk. Lovely
After all we have been through. Cautiously Optimistic.

Good that he's healing :)

As for honey. We had rough collies called Honey and Penny. Honey had a litter of pups and Penny got a bit too inquisitive and Honey went into defence mode and snapped at Penny, slicing her nose. My mum daubed Penny's nose with honey (sweet stuff in the jar, not the dog :P ) 1970's this would have been. That was my first lesson in honey having antiseptic qualities, and something I've never forgotten.

I remember the use honey from history - if I recall, the ancient Greeks used honey for treating battle wounds to prevent infection. I found this quote in a research paper called "Honey: a biologic wound dressing" (that is the correct spelling) more about Manuka honey:

There are 2 types of antibacterial activity. In most honeys the activity is due to hydrogen peroxide, but much of this is inactivated by the enzyme catalase that is present in blood, serum, and wound tissues. In manuka honey, the activity is due to methylglyoxal which is not inactivated. The manuka honey used in wound-care products can withstand dilution with substantial amounts of wound exudate and still maintain enough activity to inhibit the growth of bacteria. There is good evidence for honey also having bioactivities that stimulate the immune response (thus promoting the growth of tissues for wound repair), suppress inflammation, and bring about rapid autolytic debridement. There is clinical evidence for these actions, and research is providing scientific explanations for them

Arthur and I are now up to 30 minutes walk and the limp is barely noticeable.
The wound now measure's 14 x 14 and my vet said last week, it has showed significant improvement. That is music to my ears.
He also said he though another 4 weeks and it will be healed. This really is the first time he has given a ball park figure.
So all is going in the right direction. Still cautiously optimistic, as he has had so many setbacks, before my vet and I got him. This all started around early September.
Thank you for asking.

Bless you Bob.

I have had good news yesterday.
Arthurs leg has healed and Glen no longer wants to see him for it again. Also when he came. I was told he had an injury in the other shoulder. Glen did everything to it yesterday and there is no injury there. BUT he does have a problem with a toe on that foot. Yelps when it is squeezed. So Glen thinks he has something in it. Antibiotics and pain killer and back next Friday for that. Didn't think I would get away without going there weekly. :?
I have to say, I haven't a great deal of regard for the previous vet.

Glad to hear the leg has healed, but sorry to hear about the toe problem and will keep everything crossed here.
Know what you mean about the vets, too. Take care. {hug}
