Stop fixating on weight - exercise increases longevityStop fixating on weight - exercise increases longevityI'm amazed at the way everyone seems obsessed with weight. Yes, it's unhealthy to be overweight, but it is far more important to eat healthily and exercise every day.
It is exercise that will keep your heart and lungs healthy and your circulation going, weight bearing exercise that will ward off osteoporosis and stretching that will keep you flexible. These are just so totally important I can't understand why everyone is just concerned with weight only. Much of the "normal" signs of aging - weakness, stiff joints and loss of balance can be forestalled by exercise. From Dr Henry S Lodge in "Younger Next Year": "...a man who's thirty pounds overweight, smoking a pack a day but exercising every day has a lower statistical mortality than a thin, sedentary non-smoker." Not only weight I have to watch, but I excercise as well. Wendy http://www.busheyk9.co.uk
If you can't be a good example........ you will just have to be a horrible warning

Free hens are happy hens. Chicken centreparcs now complete! The girls love it.
Re: Stop fixating on weight - exercise increases longevityAbsolutely agree, my aim isn't just to see how much weight I can lose but to see how much fitter I can get so that I won't be so susceptible to illnesses such as diabetes etc. This means a healthier diet and regular exercise. Its nice to see the scales going down, but its also nice to get up the hill without puffing too much and having a rest half way up, then walking briskly round the field instead of ambling.
I think its good to have targets, and the easiest way to measure these is weight - I have another 4lbs to go and that is when I get my bike That will step up the exercise and hopefully my longevity Re: Stop fixating on weight - exercise increases longevityLast week I was at cowboy camp for 4 days. There were a lot of women of a certain age and shape. We are all clinically obese. We all ride every day or as much as we can, muck out and care for at least one horse, this includeds poo picking fields, we all worked, we all walked a dog, we all did the gardening (I have worked 6/7 hours every day in the garden this week and am knackered). We all ate sensibly, I had a snickers bar (boy was it hard work at camp, 3-4 1 1/2 hour sessions a day) for energy and I can't remember the last time I had a treat like that. But we are all overweight. My family say I need to exercise 8 hours a day and not eat before I lose any weight. I have been to the doctor and seen a diet specialist, nothing wrong with my diet but need to eat more fish. I haven't given up because if I didn't exercise and watch what I eat I would balloon but it is depressing when you try hard and still put on weight. Sorry for the moan.
