50 fitter than 20

Post by Richard »

I listened to the Radio on the way to work this morning and they say that the average 50 year old is now fitter than a 20 year old.

Comments ?? !!

Dream on Dave. !!

Not fitter than the 21 year old we picked up tonight !!....Yes...our James is back from Iraq, his Mum and Dad are on holiday so Nana and Grandad had to step into the breach.. They pulled them out early, sorry )ot:

At the moment I am walking Dave in the morning with an 18 year old girl,as her Mum is away. I am sure I am a darn sight fitter than she is.

I read that in the paper as well. Apparently it's because the young ones eat all the wrong kind of food, I agree with the statement. When I did the 13 mile charity walk, I was running towards the end, and overtaking a lot of younger ones. :-D

I'm 61 and my son Leo is 20.

I have to say that I think I'm fitter than him, not on the food issue because he eats well, but 'in the old days' we'd spent the previous 8 years or so more outdoors doing various activities and not sitting around so much etc.

It's probably the combination of TV, PC, Games Consoles, late late nights and general over chilling out. I was always woken up and not left to sleep until 11am etc.

Remember the 'an hour before eleven is worth two after seven' ?

It's determining also what 'fitter' means. If it were down to aches and pains, a 20 year old wins hands down !

I think I am fitter than I was when I was 20. Although I was slimmer then I smoked and did absolutely no exercise at all other than walking to the pub with my boyfriend!

Now I eat very healthily, exercise every day in some way or other, haven't smoked for about 20 years and am only drinking two nights a week. Mind you I'm not 50 till December - maybe I will go to pot all of a sudden on my birthday!

Hmm. Not sure on this one. I don't think I was physically fit at 20 as I didn't do any particular excercise.

Don't think I am physically fit now so....... confused>

However, I guess, at 20, at least you have youth on your side! Experience doesn't really count in the fitness stakes I guess!

What a good subject for debate. I tend to agree that on the whole we are becoming a nation of fat and lazy folk. The availability of junk food, both from purpose made outlets and the frozen ready meal variety has got a lot to answer for. The average 20 year old has probably spent far less time kicking a football around the park than I ever did, they’re more likely to have spent their youth battling digital demons on their games consul than doing physical exercise. When I was an apprentice twenty something years ago there wasn’t one person in my class who could afford to run a car, these days it seems that automobiles are so freely available on finance that everyone has got one from the moment they turn 17. As a child my main mode transportation was my bicycle, I wouldn’t have dreamt of asking for a lift, it seems that the kids of today both expect and demand taxiing to their destination; you only have to look at the procession of 4x4s queuing outside of any secondary school to work that one out. Some friends of ours ferry their girls absolutely everywhere, in some cases it’s only ¾ of a mile to their activity; it seems ridiculous to me that they feel that they’re not being good parents unless they are doing this. Even if you take an uber-cautious attitude and decide that they need escorting for reasons of safety what would be wrong with walking to meet them? It doesn’t take that long to walk ¾ of a mile.

Personally I’m probably not as fit as I was at twenty but then again I have always been required to maintain a certain level of fitness. I don’t smoke anymore, I do more time in the gym than I used to but age is a continual battle which we are ultimately destined to lose. I used to run 1 ½ miles in under 9 minutes, it’ll take me close to 12 ½ these days. {cry}

Whoopee, only five years until I'm fitter than I was at twenty. Do I have to do any exercise or does it just happen naturally?
